High Power shooting at CCSSEF encompasses a variety of rifle competitions, including CMP Matches featuring WWII era rifles, Across-the-Course Matches with AR-15 Service Rifles and AR-based ‘Space Guns,’ and long distance Palma and F-Class Matches. These competitions start at 200 yards and stretch out to 600 yards on the foundation’s newest range (and are shot at 1000 yards at other clubs). Thursday is High Power day at the foundation, with 600 yard practice in the morning from 8:30am to 11:30am, and 300 yard practice from 3:30pm until 6:00pm. Competitions are typically held on Sunday mornings.

Two organizations sanction Across the Course matches. The CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) and the NRA (National Rifle Association) operate with similar rules. The NRA rules tend to be rather forgiving as to Rifle and equipment used in match, the CMP requirements are more finite as to create fairness in available variations of allowable equipment. The CMP has its focus on “Service Rifle” competition. The rifles must conform to strict guidelines with current and previously recognized US military firearms as the model. The NRA allows a wide range of rifles including service rifles to be used in competition. There are also differences in the conduct of the match. However, the one item there is no separation between the organizations is SAFETY.
